Statement on the arrests around Comrade Jimmy Mohlala

Statement on the arrests around Comrade Jimmy Mohlala

5 October 2010

The African National Congress has noted and welcomes the recent development where four suspects have been arrested and appeared in court for allegedly being involved in the assassination of Cde Jimmy Mohlala at his home in kaNyamazane in January 2009. We believe that this development will help bring to an end the speculations that have to a greater extent made the people of Mpumalanga look into one another with suspicion and distrust, which have a potential to cause instability and uneasiness in the province.

The ANC has always been of the firm view that the law should take its course and our stand is that anyone involved in the brutal murders of Mr. Mohlala and others like him, should be apprehended and be given the harshest punishment possible through the court processes.

The ANC calls for the speedy processing and conclusion of the case as it would give the family and the province some relief from the pain of losing of a loved one and the speculations around the matter. We also call on the community to where possible, assist the police in the investigation whilst they avoid taking the law into their own hands. We are confident that the police are competent in doing their work around this matter.
